As an integrated product design studio, we interface between what is known and what has yet to be discovered. Reshaping preconceptions with respect for the belief that design is inseparable from human behaviour.

South Africa interprets Dutch Design to aid in local development.  Hand-craft and hi-tech meet as skilled wood crafters from the Northern Cape village of Kharkams use alien vegetation to create fully-functional funky flash drives. USB ports and memory sticks are not what would normally flash across your mind when you think of technology coming out of the Kalahari. Neither are they all that the Kharkams Technology Crafters produce.  The project, supported by Department of Water Affairs and Forestry's Working for Water programme, is as much about creating jobs, fighting poverty and building pride as it is about ... SA creates world's safest traffic light pole. A new South African innovation is being heralded as the world’s first truly safe traffic light system and is currently being piloted on the streets of Johannesburg. The Modular Traffic Light System (MTLS) is the safest in the world as the entire system is composed of polymer or plastic with no steel or metal components, explains the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA). The system poses minimal danger to motorists in the unfortunate circumstance of a collision with the traffic light. The system is the first of its kind in the world and was ... XYZ's design department has just run a complex tool which local suppliers deemed impossible. Logistically it made more sense to manufacture the product in South Africa, though due to part complexity a specialist Chinese toolmaker was used. To ensure the tool could run on standard moulding machines, the manufacturing process was strategized during the design process to ensure our South  African and international processes worked seamlessly. The tool itself produces a single component which serves multiple engineering functions such as water proofing and a flexible "sock" like shield around PCB components ... Click here to view more.

Speech by President Nelson Mandela at the launch of the reintegration employment concerns, the Baygen/Nicro factory. With the advent of democracy in our country, we all became quickly aware of the extent of the devastation left by apartheid on our people. We realised the enormity of the challenges facing the new government, amongst them widespread poverty, hunger; unemployment; a lack of skills; inadequate shelter; health services; and education for the vast majority. Government cannot tackle these problems by itself, and we have been calling for a partnership across sectors and groups to help rebuild our country. Many individuals and institutions have answered that call by assuming their share of responsibility in the reconstruction of our new society. When we called for the business community to help us fight crime, we were heartened by the establishment... Click here to read more.

The need to manage "low cost" procurement? On a recent tool validation trip to China, XYZ experienced a new "market" style of plastic procurement. The following quote from a colleague provides some insight  "The raw material supply here is unlike anything I have experienced anywhere else in the world, the area known as Plastics Citywhich comprises of hundreds of small suppliers who occupy premises no bigger than a double garage.  They advertise their stock on a blackboard attached to the wall and one has to go from shop to shop to find what one needs." Although pellet prices may be competitive, it is important to ascertain mechanical properties and possible production reject rates, to ensure initial cost savings are not lost later in the manufacturing process. XYZ validates all polymer selections using a global supplier network. Click here to view the image.
